Perceptions about babywearing

Why the negative comments?

I noticed there have been a lot of moms in different babywearing groups talking about the negative comments that they get from family or strangers about wearing their babies/children.

.

What is so crazy to people about carrying our children the way we do? It is not a new found way of carrying or caring for our children, but it is still newer to our “civilized” societies. I think it is crazy people saying that the kids will never learn to walk, or to not coddle that baby so much by carrying them, or the other things people have said.

.

I have been fortunate to not receive anything but positive comments while babywearing. I think it’s harsh that so many have to hear negative comments, often from their own families, about it. I love being able to care for my babies, both big and small, while being able to get dinner on the table, starting laundry, picking up from preschool or even just for simple cuddles when someone is cranky and needs to wind down.

.

I remember the first time I wore Sam in my ring sling I was 9 months pregnant, my parents were visiting to be with us while Oscar was born, and we had met up with Niclas' family for a little walk and fika (or lunch for me because I was very pregnant and starving- I literally had ordered a hambuger while everyone ate sandwiches or baked goods haha).  But I remember during the walk, Sam was wayyyy over tired and cranky.  He had started off walking and obviously needed to be in the stroller but kicked and screamed when we tried to put him in.

.

I hesitated because I kept thinking, "what is my husband's family going to think?" and I hate that I felt that fear and anxiety.  Sam kept on kicking and screaming so finally I whipped out the sling, put it on and him in it quickly and we continued our walk.  He stopped crying right away and everyone was commenting on how great the ring sling was.  I was so surprised!  The icing on the cake was that Sam fell asleep after maybe 10-15 minutes of walking AND transferred nicely over to his stroller without waking up.  He napped the entire time we had lunch.

.

It has allowed me to steal some extra time while my “babies” are still small. I’m noticing more and more how fast the days, weeks, and years are going by and it seems to slow down just a bit when I get to carry my babies in the sling.

.

It’s hard enough as it is to be a parent, can’t we just support each other? We are all doing the best that we can each day!
